Why I Don’t Bill Insurance Directly

And how you might still get reimbursed

A common question I receive is: “Do you take insurance?”

The short answer is: I don’t bill insurance directly.

However, I can provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement, if your plan includes benefits for naturopathic medicine and/or acupuncture.

Why I Choose Not to Contract with Insurance

Behind this decision is a deeper intention: to protect the quality and depth of the care relationship.

When providers contract with insurance companies, those companies often dictate what types of services are allowed, how much time can be spent, and which diagnoses are “eligible” for treatment. That dynamic fundamentally shifts the therapeutic relationship—from a collaboration between you and me, to one filtered through a third party’s rulebook.

And in that model, I’m ultimately accountable to the insurer—not to you. By remaining out-of-network, I choose to work for my patients, not for insurance companies. It allows us to build care plans based on your unique needs, without interference or imposed limitations.

What You Can Do

If you’d like to try for reimbursement, I’m happy to provide a superbill after each visit or at regular intervals. Keep in mind:

  • Not all plans offer out-of-network coverage

  • Some plans cover acupuncture but not naturopathic care (or vice versa)

  • Reimbursement amounts vary

  • You may need to meet a deductible first

I recommend calling your insurance provider to ask whether they reimburse for out-of-network naturopathic doctors (NDs) and/or licensed acupuncturists (LAc).

HSA/FSA Cards Are Welcome

Most services and supplements offered in my clinic are eligible for payment using HSA or FSA cards. This is often the most straightforward way to use pre-tax dollars for your care.
